The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, is currently in Seoul, South Korea, where he is attending a partnership meeting between the country and the African continent, aimed at finding joint solutions to challenges facing the world.
As announced by Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation: “Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe is in Seoul, South Korea, for the 2026 Korea-Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.”
The meeting is held under the theme “Korea-Africa Partnership for Joint Response Amid Global Transformation,” which means the partnership between Korea and Africa in finding joint solutions to global challenges.
This meeting, being held for the first time, brings together representatives from 50 African countries and aims to strengthen cooperation between nations in finding ways to respond to the changes continuing to emerge globally, particularly regarding trade, the movement of goods and the growing challenges rooted in the political tensions between major world powers.
The meeting is expected to be attended by delegations from 50 out of 54 African countries, as well as four continental organizations, including the African Union and the African Development Bank.
According to a statement from the South Korean Presidential Office, on Tuesday President Lee Jae Myung is expected to meet with more than 20 ministerial-level delegations from various African countries, holding discussions aimed at advancing cooperation between South Korea and the African continent.
Opening the meeting, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun highlighted the important role Africa plays in finding solutions to the political shifts that have disrupted global trade and supply chains. Minister Cho said the world is facing a rising complex of challenges including trade flows and the growing issues around energy and food security.
He stated: “Due to the security situation in the Middle East and the challenges around the Strait of Hormuz, Africa’s needed role in the economy continues to become more visible.”
He said that this is the moment when the need for cooperation between South Korea and the African continent has become more apparent than ever before.
