The AFC/M23 coalition, which opposes the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has announced that the forces they are fighting against which include FARDC, FDLR and the Burundian army have resumed using heavy weapons, including drones, in attacks that continue to claim the lives of many civilians.
This announcement was made by the coalition’s political spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka, in statement released to the public.
In the statement, Lawrence Kanyuka said, “The Kinshasa regimes continues to violate the ceasefire it nonetheless signed in Doha. It persists in its bellicose drift, insolently rejecting the urgent appeals from regional leaders and international partners in favor of a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Kanyuka further stated that “The AFC/M23 calls upon the Congolese people to bear witness to the ongoing massacres targeting civilian populations, as well as to the widespread attacks launched across all front lines by the coalition forces of the Kinshasa regime, including the FARDC, FDLR, Mai-Mai Wazalendo, mercenaries, and the Burundi National Defense Force, which are deploying fighter jets, combat drones, and heavy artillery.
He added, “These systematic killings, which deliberately target innocent civilians, constitute war crimes and crimes against humanity. Such barbarity can no longer be tolerated.”
These extreme acts of violence carried out by the Kinshasa government continue even as talks between the DRC government and the AFC/M23 coalition, led by the DRC authorities, are ongoing in Doha, Qatar.
Last week, the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, visited the DRC after his trip to Rwanda, where he was received by President Paul Kagame. He then continued to Kinshasa, where he was welcomed by President Félix Tshisekedi.
