The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, has expressed surprise that Dr. Denis Mukwege, a Congolese medical doctor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate condemned the killings that took place at the Byambwe Health Center in North Kivu but failed to mention the perpetrators.
This follows a statement by Dr. Mukwege, who shared his grief regarding the massacre committed at the Byambwe Health Center.
The killings occurred on the night of November 14th to 15th, 2025, and were strongly condemned by the Vatican, given that the health center where the attack happened belongs to the Catholic Church.
The Pope’s office condemned the attack that targeted members of the Saint Paul Parish of Byambwe in North Kivu Province, stating that the incident claimed 28 lives and that the health facility was set ablaze.
In Dr. Denis Mukwege’s statement, he said that “among the 17 people killed, 11 were women who were lying in the maternity ward preparing to give birth.”
He continued: “As a gynecologist and expert in women’s health, I strongly condemn these heinous acts. Harming women who give life is a crime beyond all others. It is not only an act of terrorism against civilians but also an attempt to destroy part of the wider community.”
He went on to say that the world should not stand by while acts resembling genocide are committed against Congolese people. He emphasized the urgent need for action to protect civilians in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Reacting to Dr. Mukwege’s message, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olivier Nduhungirehe, said: “The perpetrators of these atrocities are well known, it is the Ugandan ADF extremist group. It is surprising that Dr. Denis Mukwege, who claims to be informing the international community (judging from whom he addressed on X), failed to mention this in his lengthy statement of condemnation, despite clearly having taken enough time to prepare it.”
The ADF-NALU rebel group, which fights the Ugandan government and is based in the forests of the DRC, has frequently carried out similar barbaric attacks killing civilians and burning their property.
