Rwanda is rolling out a new digital ID system, launched by the National Identification Agency (NIDA) in August 2025, to provide citizens, refugees, and residents with a unified, digital identity for easier and paperless access to services.
The system, which began biometric data collection in mid-September 2025, will offer physical cards, a digital version via a smartphone application, and a unique lifelong ID number.
