Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe, has dismissed recent claims published by Africa Intelligence regarding the ongoing peace negotiations, calling the report inaccurate and misleading.
In an article shared by Africa Intelligence on social media, the outlet suggested that “Washington, irked by the leak of a draft agreement, demanded that the parties maintain strict confidentiality regarding the content of the final agreement,” and further alleged that “Kigali is required to immediately withdraw its defensive measures.”
Minister Nduhungirehe strongly rebutted both assertions, clarifying that it was not the United States but rather Rwanda that voiced concern over the leak if the draft document. He emphasized that Kigali had requested all parties involved in the talks to uphold confidentiality throughout the negotiation process.
“It’s not Washington that was “irked” by the leak of a draft peace agreement but Kigali, which demanded the other parties to respect the confidentiality of the discussions.” Said Nduhungirehe.
Moreover, the Minister pointed out that the claim regarding Rwanda’s military position was entirely baseless. Contrary to what the article alleged, he affirmed that the draft peace agreement does not contain any mention of “Rwandan troops,” “Rwanda Defense Force,” or any call for “withdrawal.”
“You can’t find anywhere in the draft peace agreement to be signed tomorrow [it’s today], the words “immediate withdrawal of Rwanda’s defensive measures”. As a matter of facts, the words “Rwanda Defense Force”, “Rwandan troops” or “withdrawal” are nowhere to be seen in the document.”
While the final version of the peace agreement is expected to be signed today, Minister Nduhungirehe reassured the public that the document is the result of careful, balanced discussions and only includes amendments aimed at clarifying certain provisions, not enforcing unilateral demands.
Rwanda has remained firm on its commitment to peace and regional stability, but continues to reject misinformation that undermines the integrity of diplomatic efforts.
