The United States is preparing to introduce a limited number of specially designed passports featuring the image of President Donald Trump, as part of celebrations marking 250 years of American independence.
According to the US State Department, the commemorative passports will begin to be issued this summer, starting at the Washington Passport Agency. They will primarily be available to individuals renewing their passports in person at that location, while online applicants and other passport centers will continue to receive the standard design.
A State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, explained that the initiative is intended to honor the country’s historic milestone. “As the United States celebrates America’s 250th anniversary in July, we are preparing to release a limited number of specially designed passports to commemorate this historic occasion,” he said.
The redesigned passport will feature an image of Trump along with his signature in gold on the inside front cover. Despite the visual changes, officials emphasized that the document will maintain the same advanced security features that make US passports among the most secure in the world.
The back cover of the passport is expected to display imagery from Declaration of Independence painting, a well-known historical painting by John Trumbull depicting the presentation of the Declaration of Independence.
Currently, US passports include artwork of Francis Scott Key, inspired by the events that led to the writing of the national anthem, along with lines from the anthem printed inside.
This move is part of a broader trend of commemorative items tied to the anniversary, including coins and national park passes that also feature Trump’s likeness. However, the use of a president’s image on a passport, a key international identification document valid for up to 10 years marks a particularly notable step.
While the exact number of passports to be issued remains unclear, the release has already sparked discussion due to the symbolic and political significance of incorporating a sitting president’s image into such an essential document.
