Umuganda is one of Rwanda’s strongest traditions. It brings people together every last Saturday of the month to clean, build, and improve their communities. For many years, Umuganda has helped make Rwanda cleaner, safer, and more united. Today, one of the most important groups in this national exercise is the youth. Young people are increasingly taking part in Umuganda, and their participation is helping shape the future of the country in many positive ways.
Youth participation in Umuganda is important for several reasons. First, young people have the energy and strength needed for community activities. Most Umuganda tasks like digging trenches, planting trees, repairing roads, or cleaning public spaces require physical effort. Because the youth make up a large percentage of the population, their involvement makes the work faster, easier, and more effective. When more young people join, more work gets done, and the results are seen quickly.
Second, youth involvement strengthens the value of community service. When young people participate in Umuganda, they learn responsibility and teamwork. They understand that development does not depend only on the government, but also on the contribution of citizens. This lesson is very important in building a generation that values service and unity. Young people who grow up embracing Umuganda are likely to become adults who care about their communities and take action whenever help is needed.
Moreover, Umuganda creates an opportunity for the youth to learn from their elders. During the activities, the young and the old share ideas, experiences, and stories. Elders guide the youth on how things used to be done, why certain community values matter, and how Rwanda has grown through collective effort. This exchange of knowledge helps the youth connect with their culture and understand the importance of unity. It also strengthens relationships between generations, which is essential for national stability.
Youth participation also brings creativity and innovation to community work. Young people often bring fresh ideas such as new ways of organizing teams, using social media to mobilize others, or suggesting more modern environmental practices. Some youth groups have introduced activities like recycling plastic waste, using improved gardening methods, or raising awareness about climate change during Umuganda sessions. These creative ideas help make Umuganda more effective and more relevant to today’s challenges.
Another benefit is that Umuganda gives the youth a sense of belonging. Many young people want to feel involved and useful, especially in a fast-changing world. Participating in Umuganda helps them feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves. They contribute to visible change such as cleaner neighborhoods, repaired roads, or newly planted forests and they can proudly say, “I helped build this.” This sense of pride encourages them to keep participating and to inspire their friends to join as well.
In addition, Umuganda helps reduce the gap between leaders and community members. During these sessions, young people often work side by side with local leaders. This makes leaders more approachable and helps the youth feel heard. It also builds trust, which is necessary for good governance and community cooperation. When young people see leaders working with them instead of instructing from a distance, they develop more confidence in local structures.
However, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. Some young people feel that Umuganda activities are repetitive or not well organized. Others may be busy with school or work, making it hard to participate. Some youth also lack motivation because they do not fully understand the purpose of Umuganda. To solve these challenges, communities can involve youth in planning Umuganda activities, introduce more exciting projects, and hold sessions that explain the long-term importance of community service. Schools, universities, and youth organizations can also play a role by encouraging and mobilizing students.
Despite these challenges, it is clear that youth involvement in Umuganda is growing, and this is good for Rwanda’s future. When young people take part, Umuganda becomes more effective, more energetic, and more innovative. The youth are not only helping to clean and build communities; they are also learning leadership, responsibility, and unity. Their participation strengthens Rwanda’s culture of working together and ensures that future generations will continue this important tradition.
In conclusion, the youth play a powerful role in Umuganda. Their energy, creativity, and commitment make them key contributors to community development. By participating in Umuganda, young people help build cleaner and safer communities while shaping themselves into responsible citizens. With continued encouragement and involvement, the youth will keep making Umuganda stronger and more impactful for years to come.
