The AFC/M23 coalition, which opposes the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has confirmed that it has taken control of the city of Uvira, urging residents to continue with their daily activities without fear.
The announcement was made by Lawrence Kanyuka, the AFC/M23 Political Spokesperson, on Wednesday afternoon, December 10, 2025.
In this statement detailing the current situation of the fighting in North Kivu, Kanyuka began by recalling that over the past three months, the AFC/M23 coalition has consistently condemned hate speech and continuous attacks carried out against civilians based on their identity.
He also stated that during those three months, the group continued to denounce killings allegedly committed in the areas under their control by the opposing forces, consisting of the Congolese army (FARDC) working together with its allies, including the Burundian military.
He said, “Today, the threat has been lifted, and we confirm that the city of Uvira is now liberated. We call on our compatriots to resume their activities with complete peace of mind: the AFC/M23 is present to ensure their protection.”
Lawrence Kanyuka further urged displaced residents who had fled and were in hiding to return to their homes, assuring them that there is no longer any threat they should fear.
