President Felix Tshisekedi’s party of the Democratic Republic of Congo has revealed that Lieutenant General Christian Tshiwewe, the former chief of staff of the Armed forces of the DRC is suspected of planning to assassinate the Head of the State and during interrogations, he reportedly didn’t deny the allegations.
For several days, reports have circulated indicating that Lieutenant General Christian Tshiwewe and several generals within FARDC were arrested by military intelligence in the DRC, suspected of plotting a coup against the current government.
According to information from the news outlet ACTUALITE.CD, Augustin Kabuya, Secretary General of the UDPS ( Union for Democracy and Social Progress), President Tshisekedi’s party, stated on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, that the former FARDC Chief of Staff is suspected of attempting to assassinate President Felix Tshisekedi.
He stated: “The day the former Chief of Staff Christian Tshiwewe was arrested, I saw people saying: ‘You see, generals from the same family are now being imprisoned.’ Listen carefully: when President Félix Tshisekedi was promoting generals, was he doing so based on their family origin? Where do such statements even come from? Clearly, people do not understand the seriousness of this issue. How can someone sit down and say such things after trying with his associates to kill a person, the father of a nation, the supreme authority, the head of state?”
Kabuya further said that during the interrogations conducted by security services, General Christian Tshiwewe did not deny the allegations against him.
He added: “That means he himself admitted that he had decided to kill him. Even before killing a chicken, one would at least think twice. So, all of us who are standing behind him aren’t we supposed to think about how we get ourselves out of such danger? Should we really be clapping for them?”
The current Chief of Staff of the DRC Army, Lieutenant General Jules Banza Mwilambwe, commented last weekend on the recent arrests of several generals, clarifying that the arrests were not set up by military justice.
