Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe mentioned that even though Rwanda has a hope on the peace agreement that was recently signed with DRC in Washington, the confidence is “partial” because this country keeps deploying heavy weapons in its eastern region and has brought in more mercenaries.
All this is being done by the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, whereas, it had recently signed the peace agreement with Rwanda, this peace agreement was signed in Washington DC in the U.S.A
Minister of foreign affairs, Ambassador Olivier Nduhungirehe said that Rwanda has partial confidence about this agreement because of two main reasons:
“This is not our first agreement between Rwanda and Congo or other parties in these past 25 years. About 10 agreements were signed since 1999 and none of them were fulfilled by the government of Congo.
Minister Nduhungirehere showed Rwanda’s concerns regarding the behaviors of the government of Congo that keep favoring a path of war.
He said: “We know that the government of Congo keeps bringing weapons at the field, attack drones, and tanks brought from Asia, also there are more mercenaries that came Colombia”.
He added:” What we see in the Eastern Congo doesn’t match the hopes and agreements we had with it in Washington. However, we find hopes in our strong mediator, United States which gives this agreement broader scope, including the Doha talks that were absent in previous negotiations like those in Luanda.”
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said that even though there are still some doubts, Rwanda trusts the United States as a strong and committed mediator throughout these issues and that it will push DRC to honor its agreements.
