How musicians are using streaming platforms to make money
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

In today’s digital world, streaming platforms have completely changed how musicians share their music and earn a living. Instead of selling CDs or waiting for radio airplay, artists can now upload their songs to platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, Audiomack, and Boomplay and reach millions of listeners worldwide. These platforms have opened new ways for musicians to make money, build fan bases, and grow their careers faster than ever before.

One of the main ways musicians make money from streaming platforms is through royalties. Every time a listener streams a song, the platform pays a small amount of money to the artist. While each stream might pay only a fraction of a cent, the income adds up when the artist gets thousands or even millions of streams. For example, a Rwandan artist like Bruce Melodie earns money every time one of his popular songs is streamed on YouTube or Spotify. Similarly, global stars like Burna Boy, Taylor Swift, and Drake earn millions of dollars from streaming royalties each year.

Another way musicians use streaming platforms to make money is through YouTube monetization. Musicians can earn revenue from ads that play before or during their music videos. The more views their videos get, the more income they receive from YouTube’s ad-sharing program. This is why many artists put effort into creating interesting music videos and engaging visuals to attract more viewers and increase their earnings. For example, Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania often releases high-quality videos that quickly gain millions of views, boosting his income through YouTube ads.

Streaming platforms also help musicians make money indirectly. When artists release their music on platforms like Spotify or Boomplay, it helps them reach new audiences. This exposure can lead to more live shows, concert bookings, and brand partnerships. Companies often want to work with artists who have a large online following. For instance, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr gained huge attention through streaming success, which later opened doors for brand endorsements and international performances.

Additionally, musicians can earn through fan subscriptions and donations. Some platforms, such as Audiomack, allow fans to support their favorite artists directly by subscribing or sending tips. This creates a closer connection between artists and their listeners, while also providing a steady income stream. Independent musicians who might not yet have big record deals use this method to sustain their careers.

Another growing trend is merchandise and ticket sales linked to streaming accounts. Artists often promote their upcoming concerts or sell branded items through their streaming profiles. For example, Spotify for Artists allows musicians to display links to their merchandise stores or ticket sales directly under their songs, making it easy for fans to support them beyond streaming.

In short, streaming platforms have made it easier for musicians to earn money in many creative ways. They provide not only a source of income through royalties but also help artists grow their audiences, book more shows, and gain brand deals. While streaming may not make every artist rich overnight, it gives them the power to reach the world and turn their passion for music into a career.
