Is Kigali becoming too expensive for its youth?

Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, is known for its beauty, safety, and cleanliness. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Africa, attracting investors, tourists, and people from all over the world. But as the city grows, many young people are starting to ask themselves: “Can we really afford to live in Kigali anymore?”

For the youth, life in Kigali is exciting but also challenging. On one hand, the city offers opportunities in business, education, and technology. On the other hand, the cost of living is rising quickly, and many young people feel left behind.

The Rising Cost of Housing

One of the biggest challenges for Kigali’s youth is the price of housing. Rent in the city has gone up, especially in central areas like Kiyovu, Kimihurura, and Nyarutarama. Even in neighborhoods that used to be affordable, such as Remera or Kabeza, prices are climbing. Many young workers and students cannot afford apartments on their own. As a result, they often share small rooms or move further away from the city center, which increases transport costs.

Food and Daily Expenses

Food prices are another concern. While Kigali has many modern supermarkets and restaurants, eating there is expensive. A simple meal in a restaurant can cost more than what some young workers earn in a day. Even at local markets, prices of basic foods like beans, rice, and vegetables have gone up because of high demand and transport costs. This makes it hard for youth to save money or plan for the future.

Job Opportunities vs. Salaries

Kigali is known for creating jobs in banking, tech, tourism, and services. Many young people graduate each year hoping to find good work. However, salaries often do not match the high cost of living. A young professional may earn just enough to pay rent and transport but not enough to live comfortably. Others turn to side hustles like freelancing, online businesses, or selling products to survive.

The Pressure to Fit In

Life in Kigali also comes with social pressure. Youth feel the need to dress fashionably, go out to cafés, and use the latest phones. This lifestyle can be expensive, and many young people spend more than they can afford just to “fit in.” While Kigali offers a modern lifestyle, it also creates stress for those who struggle to keep up.

What Can Be Done?

The question of affordability is important for Kigali’s future. If young people cannot afford to live in the city, they may leave or feel excluded from its growth. Solutions could include building more affordable housing, improving public transport, and supporting youth-led businesses. The government and private sector need to create policies that match the needs of the youth, who make up the majority of Rwanda’s population.

Kigali is a city full of promise, but it risks becoming too expensive for its own youth. While development and growth are good, they should not come at the cost of leaving young people behind. For Kigali to continue shining as a model African city, it must remain a place where its youth can dream, work, and live without being crushed by high costs.
