The City of Kigali has announced that starting this Friday, four roads will begin operating a dedicated path reserved only for public transport buses during peak hours.
This was announced by the City of Kigali on Thursday, April 23, 2026, just one day before the program begins. The implementation will officially start on Friday, April 24, 2026.
The roads included are:
- The road from the City Centre Roundabout going through Peyage–Kanogo–Rwandex–Sonatubes–Giporoso up to Cyamitsingi.
- The road from Sonatubes–Kicukiro Centre continuing to Nyanza Bus Park in Kicukiro District.
- The road from Downtown Kigali going to 1030 (formerly Nyarugenge Prison area), continuing through Roundabout–Yamaha–Nyabugogo Bus Park.
- The road from Hotel Gloria (in the city center) going to Nyarugenge Market and up to City Plaza.
The City of Kigali also stated that:
“This dedicated path will be used by buses and essential vehicles during peak hours (from 06:00 to 10:00 in the morning and from 16:30 to 21:00 in the evening).”
During other hours, all vehicles will use the roads normally, and the roads will be marked with appropriate signs indicating the system.
This initiative had previously been introduced on a trial basis on the road leading to the city center via Rwandex, where special markings for public transport buses were installed.
Authorities in Rwanda have recently been encouraging commuters in Kigali to use public transport, as the system has been improved through reforms and continues to be upgraded to increase efficiency and reliability.
The state minister in the Ministry of Infrastructure, Eng. Uwihanganye Jean de Dieu, also reminded private car owners to consider using public transport, noting that it has improved significantly and will continue to be enhanced to encourage more people to adopt it.
