The African Union (AU) stated that the actions take by the United States going to arrest the President of Venezuela in his own country, were a violation of the fundamental principles of international law that require a respect for a country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
This was stated in a press release by the African Union, which said it was deeply concerned by what happened in Venezuela, including the alleged kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, and the military attacks on Venezuelan state institutions.
The statement said: “The African Union reaffirms its steadfast commitment to the fundamental principles of the International law, including respect for the sovereignty of States, their territorial integrity, and the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.”
The AU emphasized the importance of dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and respect for each country’s constitution and institutions.
The press release continued: “The African Union emphasized that the complex internal challenges facing Venezuela can only be sustainably addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.”
Finally, the AU said it stood in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and called on parties involved to act with restraint respect international law, and avoid any escalation that could undermine peace and stability.
