Amahoro Stadium has been ranked seventh on the list of the top ten best stadiums in Africa, a ranking led by one in South Africa. This stadium in Rwanda is the leading one in East Africa.
The ranking was conducted by stadium architecture experts from Football Ground Guide after a three-month inspection tour of stadiums across Africa, which produced the list of the continents 10 best stadiums.
The Top 10 Best Stadiums in Africa
1. Moses Mabhida Stadium
This stadium, built in South Africa, has a capacity of 55,500 spectators and is equipped to host all types of matches.
2. Cape Town Stadium (DHL)
Built when South Africa was preparing to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup, it has a capacity of 58,300 people.
3. First National Bank Stadium (FNB)
It had been at the top of the list of Africa’s best stadiums for over 14 years. Located in South Africa, it is now beginning to deteriorate but still holds 94,736 spectators.
4. Loftus Versfeld Stadium
Primarily used for Rugby in South Africa, it has a capacity of 51,762.
5. Ellis Park Stadium
Also known as Emirates Airline Park, this historic South African stadium hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup final and can accommodate 62,567 spectators.
6. Wanderers Stadium
The only cricket stadium on this list, located in South Africa, with a capacity of 34,000.
7. Amahoro Stadium
The only stadium south of the Sahara Desert to make the list, located in Rwanda. Built in 1986 and renovated in 2022, it now stands as an icon of modern stadiums in the region, with a capacity of 45,508.
8. Newlands Stadium
A rugby stadium in South Africa with a capacity of 51,900.
9. Mbombela Stadium
Also built ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, it now mainly hosts rugby matches and has a capacity of 43,500.
10. Centurion Park
Also known as Supersport Park, this is the home ground of South Africa’s national cricket team and has a capacity of 22,000.
This ranking is updated annually, and there is hope that by next year East Africa will have more than one stadium represented, as countries like Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania are currently building new international-standard stadiums.
