Large parts of Masisi territory in North Kivu have been emptied of residents due to ongoing fights for the past two days between AFC/M23 and the Wazalendo militia, who are fighting on behalf of the DRC government.
Reports from areas where this fighting is taking place indicate that, as of this Wednesday, the sound of both heavy and light gunfire could still be heard.
“Since early Wednesday morning, July 23, 2025, gunfire has continued to echo in parts of the Katoyi Sector and the Osso Banyungu Sector.”
It is also reported that many residents of these areas have left their homes, seeking refuge in nearby localities.
“Gunfire was also heard in the areas of Katobotobo and Luke, in the Nyamaboko I Groupement in Osso Banyungu Sector.”
The Wazalendo fighters from the PARECO faction, led by Mutayomba, are the ones currently clashing with fighters of the AFC/M23 coalition.
“This fighting began on Monday, July 21, and continued on Tuesday and again on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.”
Meanwhile, the area of Mbizo in the Ufamandu I Groupement has also reportedly experienced gunfire since Wednesday morning.
This conflict continues to pit AFC/M23 against Wazalendo fighters allied with the Kinshasa government, even as the coalition recently signed a set of principles with the government that are expected to lay the groundwork for a formal peace agreement next month.
