After the Burundian Minister of Foreign Affairs posted a statement criticizing the Government of Qatar, claiming it used its power and money to stop the United States from taking action against Rwanda, President Evariste Ndayishimiye corrected him and clarified Burundi’s official position, which earned praise from the Government of Qatar.
In his post on X, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Burundi, Dr. Bizimana Edouard, criticized the Government of Qatar, of using inappropriate ways to find solutions of the issues in the Eastern of the DRC.
In his message, Dr. Edouard Bizimana also accused Rwanda of having “deceived the President of the United States” and of continuing to violate the Washington peace agreement signed in Washington, D.C. between Rwanda and the DRC.
He said: “It is important to stress Qatar’s negative role using its influence and cash to dissuade US from taking action.”
This message was later deleted from his account. On January 4, 2026, President Évariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi publicly corrected the minister, emphasizing strong bilateral relations with Qatar and
President Ndayishimiye wrote on X: “It is important to clarify any misunderstanding and wrong statement regarding Qatar’s contribution in development and peacebuilding.”
In response to President Ndayishimiye’s clarification, Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al-Khulaifi, Qatar’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, thanked him.
He also wrote a message saying: “Thank you, Mr. President, for the clarification and your kind acknowledgment. Guided by its principled approach, the State of Qatar remains steadfast in its commitment to peacebuilding, mediation, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, and will continue to engage constructively with all partners in support of stability and lasting peace.”
The Government of Qatar has been mediating peace talks involving the DRC and the AFC/M23 coalition, and it also contributed to the peace agreement signed between DRC and Rwanda in Washington D.C.
