The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has announced that Eric Semuhungu, who was recently arrested, is being investigated for three crimes, including rape, distributing explicit sexual content, and blackmail.
RIB had earlier confirmed Semuhungu’s arrest but stated that details of the charges would not be immediately disclosed so as not to interfere with ongoing investigations.
Speaking to RADIOTV10 on the morning of Wednesday, April 15, 2026, RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry revealed that Semuhungu is facing three charges and was arrested last week on April 9.
He stated: “The first charge is rape, the second is publishing and distributing explicit sexual content through social media, and the third is blackmail.”
Dr. Murangira added that RIB has completed the case file and submitted it to the Prosecution on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
He explained that the penalties for these offenses range from a minimum of 1 year in prison to a maximum of 15 years, along with fines between 100,000 Rwandan francs and 2 million Rwandan francs.
He also noted that there is more than one victim, and investigations are ongoing, meaning the number of victims could increase.
He said: “We encourage anyone else who may have been a victim not to hesitate to come forward and report to RIB.”
The RIB spokesperson further confirmed that all complainants in this case are male.
Eric Semuhungu was deported to Rwanda about two years ago from the United States, where he had been living. He had previously been deported due to similar offenses.
After arriving in Rwanda in 2024, it was reported in July 2023 by the Review Journal in the United States that he had been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a person of the same sex.
